Christmas Travel Tips

There are only a few days left until Christmas! Crazy, right? Millions of people will be hitting the sky this holiday season to travel and visit friends and loved ones. Prepare to save your sanity with these four survival tips:
  1. Reserve your parking in advance. Since you and millions of others will be traveling this holiday, it is important to reserve your Airlines Parking Airport Parking in advance. Reserving ahead will often save you money, and certainly saves you the stress of searching for a spot last minute.
  2. Pack light. We know, you might be going somewhere cold and may need to bring heavier clothing. Don't fall into that trap! Do a simple online search for packing tips for winter travel and you will be all set. Carrying on your bag will save you tons of time and you wont have to worry about your bag ending up in a different city than you are.
  3. Avoid wrapping. Those pretty presents you spent hours wrapping? TSA might find them sketchy and may have to unwrap them to check the contents. Avoid wasting hours of work by simply wrapping any gifts when you arrive at your destination.
  4. Eat something. Low blood sugar sucks. Being hangry sucks. Getting upset for no reason isn't great either. Staying hydrated and keeping your tummy full can do wonders for your sanity this holiday travel season. Pack a few healthy snacks and leave for your flight on a full stomach.

Happy Thanksgiving: 3 Travel Tips

HAPPY THANKSGIVING from Airlines Parking!

Some people just hop in their car and drive 15 minutes to Grandmas, but many Americans have relatives and friends in other states or part of the world. If you are a part of this elite group and you have to get your travel on Thanksgiving, remember these three tips:

1.     Longer Lines are for your Safety! We all love safety, especially on holidays, right? With the recent terror attacks/threats, TSA and airport security will be heightened, so expect to wait a bit longer. With your expectations already low, your slightly-longer-than-normal security wait won’t seem so bad!
2.    Bad Weather Backup! Bad weather almost always plays a factor in thanksgiving travel. Look up alternate flight routes/other carriers that fly to your same destination, and be prepared to act fast if your flight is delayed for a long period of time and/or cancelled.
3.    Leave Early! We usually recommend arriving at our Detroit Airport Parking facility 2-2.5 hours in advance of when your flight leaves. If you are traveling on Thanksgiving, we suggest leaving 3-3.5 hours of time. After all, sitting at your gate drinking Starbucks is a whole lot better than calling your airline because you missed your flight.

Be safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

This could be stressful, but preparation is key! We want you to be as prepared as possible! As a result, we have complied some helpful tips and tricks regarding booking your airfare out of Detroit Metro Airport over the holiday season.

  •  SkyScanner found that if you book your Christmas flights THIS WEEK (the week of Sept. 28), you will save an estimated 9.1% on fares! Late to the game? Booking between November 2-8 will save you an estimated 4.8% savings on Christmas travel. Something is certainly better than nothing!

Take advantage of our special Detroit Metro Airport Parking coupon deals for even bigger savings. As soon as you book your flight, don't forget to make your online DTW parking reservation and avoid the stress of full lots during the holidays.
  • Flexibility with your travel dates goes a long way. For example, the day before Thanksgiving, Wednesday, is one of the most expensive to travel. If possible, it is suggested to add one or two days to your trip or head up a bit early. Even booking on Tuesday has the potential to save you big bucks.
  • Research your options and always book direct. Use Travelocity and Kayack to check out all of your options, but always book directly from the airline itself. Booking direct is always best, and sometimes the price is even cheaper! Bonus: the loyalty points by booking direct are awesome!
  • If possible, bring only a carry-on and a personal item. Thousands and thousands of checked bags go missing during the holiday season, and 2015 travelers will not be immune. Bringing a carry-on will expedite the check in and out process and will provide the peace of mind that your bags are in your hands at all times.
As always, don't forget to make your Detroit Metro Airport parking reservation from our website, or directly from our blog or Facebook page. Check out our DTW Airport parking coupons and save!

Comfy and Cozy: What to Wear for your Flight

Whether you are flying on a short domestic flight, or a long-haul international one, your in-flight wardrobe must be considered. We have some helpful tips on what to wear when you fly out of Detroit Metro Airport:

  • Choose loose, breathable fabrics. Tight tops or pants can restrict blood flow, and no one wants an accident thousands of feet off the ground. In addition, comfy, natural fabrics are easier to relax in.
  • Comfy shoes. You will most likely be screened at TSA, so take that into account before donning your high top lace up Converse. If you are going straight to a business meeting as soon as you land, pack a small pair of heels in your personal item for when you land, or stick to professional but comfortable ballet flats.
  • Dress relatively conservatively. Don't arrive at the gate wearing shirts with curse words or scantily clad humans on them. Airlines have been known to turn away passengers or make them turn their shirts inside out before even letting them board. If you wouldn't wear it to church with your Grandma, don't even think about wearing it on a plane.
  • Layer it up! What if it is 90 degrees when you board your flight and then in-flight temperature drops to a frigid 73. Those shorts or dress you chose to wore suddenly will be doing more harm than good. Dress in layers when flying so you are able to add and subtract clothing articles depending on the climate.
  • Deodorant and clean clothing. It may be tempting to douse yourself in perfume or cologne before a flight, but resist the urge. Many people are allergic to the scent and you may even find yourself hard to stand in such close quarters. Wear strong deodorant and clean clothing and you should be all set.
Once you have your in-flight wardrobe squared away, don't forget to make your online reservation with Airlines Parking to save on your Detroit Airport Parking!

Foul Weather? Check out our 5 Travel Tips!

Summer is upon us and with this season comes a greater potential for encountering bad weather. Sure, rain and wind may be relaxing when you are curled up at home with Netflix and a cup of coffee, but no one wants to deal with mother nature's wrath when traveling! Check out our foul weather travel tips to help make your next trip out of Detroit Metro Airport a little less stressful:
  1. Check the forecast. It may be obvious, but check the forecast of your departure, destination, and any layover cities. Sunny skies? Fantastic! If you see the potential for weather at least you will be able to prepare for potential disruption in the future.
  2. Contact your airline. See bad weather where your plane will be flying? Call your airline to inquire about flight routes and get an idea of any delays or cancellation you might encounter.
  3. Ask for the "spirit" of the law. Sure, your terms and conditions may say that the airline doesn't owe you anything, but it never hurts to ask! Flight desk staff often have the ability to give meal or beverage vouchers, transfer you to a new flight for free etc. You never know until you ask!
  4. Avoid the crowds. Don't stand in line to speak with a desk agent if the line is crazy long. Call the airline's 1-800 number and chances are you will speak to an agent much quicker than your fellow travelers. Staying away from the crowds will help reduce your stress.
  5. Stay calm during your flight. If your flight does take off and encounters bad weather, your chances for experiencing turbulence are high. Don't fret, stay calm, and fasten your seat belt. Turbulence is no worse than driving along a road with potholes. If you know flying gives you anxiety or stress, prepare accordingly.
Although the weather may be bad, Airlines Parking will be here to safely shuttle you too and from Detroit Metro Airport. Don't forget to make your free online reservation to ensure your Detroit Airport Parking is ready and waiting upon your arrival!

Summer Travel Tips

School is almost out and summer is about to be upon us! Not surprisingly, most people take a vacation during this time of the year. With tons of people traveling, the airport's can get a little hectic and stress levels may be high! Check out our list of tips on how to survive traveling to your summer vacation destination:

1. Shoes Off! Well, for TSA scanning, that is! TSA is generally stressful, but can become even more of a burden with the entire family in tow. Before you reach the TSA agents, remove your shoes, take out all liquids etc. Being prepared before you reach the front of the line will help ensure a smooth process.

2. Bend the Rules. Traveling with the kids? We can almost guarantee that you are going to stray from their normal daily routine...and that's okay! Instead of stressing about a missed bedtime, look on the positive side and go with the flow. The kiddos and your mind will thank you!

3. Fly Mid-Week. Want to beat the crowds? [Who doesn't?!] Try and schedule your flights mid-week and enjoy less crowded flights. Stuck leaving on a weekend? Don't fret! See if any flights leave early in the morning, or later in the evening as these are also fantastic times to fly.

4. Call your Bank. Nothing is worse than being stuck away from home with a frozen bank account because you forgot to call and let your company know you are using your credit card out of the state/country. Do this early [now!] before you forget during the bustle of planning your trip!

5. Make Photocopies! Make multiple copies of your passport, ID, flight information etc. to keep on your person in addition to the real thing. Scan these documents and email them to yourself so that you are always able to access them in the event you lose the originals.

Do you really want to stress less this summer? Make your free online reservation for Detroit Metro Airport parking with Airlines Parking and save time and money!

Four Ways to Commemorate Memorial Day

Oftentimes, we spend Memorial Day at the beach or by cooking out at our BBQ...but do we really take anytime to think about the meaning of this holiday? Here are a few ways to celebrate Memorial Day while taking a moment to remember the true meaning of the holiday:

  • Visit local Veterans. Take time out of your day to take a trip to the local Veterans hospital. Bake some cookies or have your children or grandchildren make cards or drawings for the Vets. Additionally, you can contact local nursing homes and visit the residents who have been in the service as well. They will love your company on this special day.
  • Pay Tribute at A Military Cemetery. Buy a bunch of flowers or a few American flags and visit your local military cemetery or war memorial. Reflecting on the sacrifices these men and women have made for our country will put you in a meditative state of mind this Monday.
  • Watch a Parade. Tons of cities put on Memorial Day Parades. If your town isn't participating, you can always watch the national on on television. What a great way to support those walking in the parade and have some fun at the same time!
  • Put together something for those overseas. Spend part of your day making cards, writing letters, or making care packages for the men and women spending holidays overseas. They will appreciate your thanks and even the most basic items such as soap, shampoo, and candy!
Don't forget to make your Detroit Airport Parking reservation with Airlines Parking! We appreciate those in military service!

5 Tips for Traveling as a Graduate

Graduation is just around the corner. Many times, grads love to celebrate their accomplishments with a trip or vacation of a lifetime, before they settle into a full time job. If this sounds like you or someone you know, check out our list of travel tips just for grads:
  1. Don't be afraid. This is our #1 piece of advice! Jump feet first into your life long dream. You already accomplished graduation [whew!], now it's your turn to have fun!
  2. Research your options. Do you know what WOOFing is? Never heard of Airbnb? Maybe it's time to do some research into all the alternatives out there. Traveling somewhere fun and new doesn't have to be a financial burden. Have the credentials? Why not spend a semester in South Korea teaching English?
  3. Save your pennies. No matter what option you choose, travel is going to take some money. Do the hard part now while you finish up school. Take on a few extra hours at work. Eat dinner at home for the next month and forego your daily Starbucks. A penny saved is a penny earned!
  4. Get the most bang for your buck. Sure, places like Italy and the UK are popular destinations, but that also makes them expensive. Why not consider Thailand, Belize, or Cambodia? At many of these destinations, you are able to eat on $10 a day and can receive a massage on the beach for just a few bucks! What's not to love?!
  5. Wait just a few months. Summer is often the busiest and most expensive time to travel. If you spend a few more months at home and leave for your trip in say, September, you will be able to score fantastic deals!
Already booked your flight out of Detroit Metro Airport? Don't forget to make your Detroit Airport Parking reservation with Airlines Parking. Congratulations to all of the new graduates!

Safe Driving Tips

Here at Airlines Parking, your safety means the world to us. Whether you are parking in our facility, traveling in our complementary shuttles, or just going about your day-to-day life, we hope that you remain safe and healthy. As a result, we have complied a list of safe driving tips so that you can arrive at your destination in once piece:

1. Don't drive too fast or too slow. "Just Right" is the perfect speed when traveling during busy weekends. What we mean is, stick to going the speed limit, or just a bit over or under, but don't rush through construction zones or speed 20mph faster than you should be. A traffic ticket or unexpected accident will surely ruin your day.

2. Don't hog the left lane. You are being a model driver and proceeding along your route at barely over the legal speed limit. If you are driving in the left lane and a long line of cars starts to form behind you, move over! Obviously, someone is in a rush and drivers often get very upset when they cannot speed by as fast as possible. Who knows, you may see that adrenaline junky down the road with a ticket. Proceed with caution and respect for other drivers.

3. Keep your headlights on at all times. Yes, headlights should be on, even in the daytime! This little trick helps you to be more visible to other drivers and could even help you avoid an accident.

4. Check your vehicle before you go. This includes a simple self performed oil check, battery check, tire pressure check, windshield wiper check etc. Make sure that you have enough wiper fluid in case of the inevitable downpour. It is always better to be safe and prepared!

5. Sharing is caring! Traveling more than a few hours? Have a few safe drivers going along with you? Perfect! Rotating the driving duty is a great way to ensure that no one gets burnt out and everyone has a chance to rest.

No matter where you are traveling, Airlines Parking wishes you a safe and stress free day! Driving to Detroit Metro Airport and then flying to your destination? Don't forget to make your free online reservation so that you can save money on Detroit Airport parking!

5 Tips for Traveling with Allergies

With the first day of spring coming soon, allergy season will be on the rise. Do you suffer from allergies related to pollen or hay? When traveling from Detroit Metro Airport to your destination, your allergens may kick into high gear. Here are 5 ways you can plan in advance in order to keep your watery eyes at bay:

  • Bring the comforts of home. Do you sleep with a dust-proof pillow case or use allergen-free sheets at home? Roll your pillow case into a small ball and bring it along during your trip. It will take up relatively little space and will help reduce your allergies while you sleep.
  • Pack all your medications in your carry-on. Resist the urge to pack your medications in your checked luggage. You will need to access your medications easily and quickly in case of an emergency. Think you need a certain amount of doses during your trip? Double that amount so you don't run into trouble.
  • Pack nasal saline spray. Surprise surprise: the air in plane cabins is abnormally dry. Nasal spray doesn't cost much and it will save you tons of trouble in the long run. Use the spray once or twice an hour to keep your nasal passage clear and hydrated from the dry air.
  • Book "smoke free" hotels. Even if a hotel has "smoking" and "non-smoking" rooms, the policy is often not strictly enforced and people bend the rules to their advantage. The best way to ensure you won't have to deal with pesky smoke is to book a hotel that does not allow smoking indoors at all.
  • Check the pollen count. Check the pollen counts from grass, trees, weeds etc. at your intended destination. This way, you will have a better idea of what you will encounter.
Before you leave out of DTW, don't forget to book your online parking reservation with Airlines Parking! Book online and save big.

5 Winter Car Care Tips

Snow is inevitable in Detroit! At Airlines Parking, we know what a hassle iced over cars can be. Unfortunately, we can't help defrost your vehicle at home or work, but we have some useful tips that can help you along the way:
  1. Clean the inside of your windshield with shaving cream. Seriously! Not only will shaving cream clean your window, it will aid in preventing fog and moisture buildup. The less you have to run the defroster, the better!
  2. Unfreeze your keys. Sticking your car keys into an almost certainly frozen car door lock will open the door to a whole bunch of potential problems! Keys may break or the lock may be too frozen to even turn! To remedy this, keep a lighter handy and warm your key before trying to insert it. In a pinch, hand sanitizer will help unfreeze as well.
  3. Cover your window. Scraping your windshield can be a hassle. Save yourself the trouble by purchasing old drop clothes, a rug, or any type of thick material and placing it over your windshield. When you are ready to leave, simply yank the cloth off your windshield and all of the pesky snow will come off too!
  4. Stuck? Use cardboard! Weather your car is stuck in the slushy mud at home, work, or the grocery store, cardboard boxes should be nearby. Place a flattened cardboard box in front of your wheels and your car will make it to safety a lot easier.
  5. Face east. When possible, park your car facing an easterly direction. Since the sun rises from the east, you will have a little help from nature's heat in starting the unfreezing process on those cold winter mornings.

How to Dress Like a Local in Top U.S. Cities

Do you often strive to "look like a local" when you are traveling? Maybe you don't want to be targeted by pickpockets who prey on tourists. 5 "Must See" Travel Destinations for 2015

We are halfway through the first month of 2015, and if you haven't started planning your vacations for this year, you should probably start! Flight options from Detroit Metro Airport are continually increasing, and choosing a destination can be quite time consuming! To start your 2015 off right, we have a list of the top five "must see" travel destinations for 2015:

Milan, Italy

Milan, Italy certainly isn't a new, or even an up-and-coming destination, so why does it make our top five for places to travel from Detroit in 2015? This year, Milan is hosting a 2015 expo on "the future of food" that will draw over 20 million visitors! This expo brings along with it tons of new architecture unique to Milan and hundreds of cuisines from across the world.

Singapore

As if you needed a reason to visit Singapore in the first place, this year, the country will celebrate its 50th year of independence with parades and merry making all year. The country is extremely safe and the urban areas are shockingly clean. Tourists can enjoy wide expanses of green spaces, cultural heritage, a national art museum, and world-class hotels and dining.

Oman

Most people have never even heard of this Middle Eastern country, located right next to the United Arab Emirates. Have you always wanted to travel to the Middle East and experience the culture and cuisine of this mysterious world? Oman is the safest Middle Eastern country in 2015 and is a highly anticipated destination to visit this year.

Durham, North Carolina

8 hour flights and international border crossings not your idea of fun? Durham, N.C. is a lot closer to home and just as interesting as overseas destinations! Durham is boasting all the latest cuisine innovations, from fair-trade coffee shops and micro-breweries, to the best local diners you can find. This year, Durham is debuting a "tree house" hotel, where guests will stay some 20 feet above the ground.

Dominican Republic

If you are okay with a shorter flight [under 4 hours from most USA cities], but still want to visit an exotic destination, the Dominican Republic may be just right for you! Instead of visiting the "usual" high-tourist areas of the Dominican Republic, consider visiting the country's pristine northern shore. The north shore will have much less traffic and the beaches and hotels are a far cry away from "ordinary."
